A fastback 68 1/2 428 Cobra Jet Mustang running in the Super
Stock Drag classes runs low 10's at around 130 mph.
This is my neighbor down the street. He won the '83 World Championships
with that car-one of two he has owned and raced since
1970. His advice: forget the big block 460, the Cleveland ideas, the 5.4L should
not even be a thought. Get a good 351Windsor block, the SVO race block would be nice,
and stroke it to about 408 cid-more than that and he says that you will be on thin ice
as far as longevity. Beefy automatic, HD 9 inch and stick to the 5.0/5.7 family of
fine, readily available and relatively cheap speed parts. If you HAVE IT BUILT right
(cyl. heads are VERY IMPORTANT) you shouldn't need any nitro or superchargers.
BUT- before you do all of that, get a NHRA/IHRA Rules book and see what else you will need
to run in whatever class you want to run in. By the way you can probably eat that Cobra Jet for
lunch with $10K alone in the right 351W package.
