: Hello everyone! I am going to be rebuilding my engine for my 73 mav very soon. I was talking to the guy at my local performance shop about upgrades (ie. cams, intake manifold, etc) and he said that because my car has a different engine than it came with (originally a six cylider) that I need to make sure what year of maverick that the new one came from. He mentioned something about 73's having a long block and that it doesn't get the same compression? How can I tell what year engine I have? I bought the car last year and really have no idea if the engine that is in it is even a Mav engine. Will other Ford engines fit in a 73 (originally six cylinder) mav? Thanks for all your help. Any suggestions about anything would be greatly appreciated and welcomed. Thanks again!
: Jeri

Jeri, the fellow at the shop is not much of a ford man (most likly chev.)but thats ok he's just trying to be caustious.
You would want to know weather it is a 260,289 or 302 since they will all look alike, and the bore and strokes are different.
Compression was changed over the years by utilizing various combinations of combustion chamber shapes and piston crown configurations.
As to his reference to compression;in the 351 size there was two block deck heights but my guess is you don't have one of these in your car.
Find the block casting ID on the right side of the block on a ledge close to the pan.
The 65-68 289 will be one of the following first 4 characters
for 289 size- C5AE- 63
C5OE- TO
C6AE- 68
FOR 302 SIZE- C8OE- 68
C8TE-
D1TZ- TO
D1OE-
D4DE-
D5ZT- 80
there will be a 6015 number with all these.
If you find somthing different then let us know and we can tell you what it is and anything else you need.
