Removing Windshield Trim

How do you go about removing windshield trim without mangling the sh*! out of it? I removed the windshield from my parts car today, and in the process made a royal mess of the trim. Of course I don't want to do this when I replace the windshield on my project car. What's the best way to do this job right?
