I to have a 289 and the wire out of the dist. runs to the coil & the other side of the coil says BAT. on it. Mine came out of a 67cougar and has the same plug in for the coil as my 250 as. I'm hopeing that it will plug right in. As for the coil I'm not to sure but you might want to get the right one

: i have a points distibutor (a non points coil) maybe the prob.!!!! what i need to know if i need a points coil and also how do i wire it??? i beleave all i have to do is run the hotwire to the + of the coil???? played a little last nite had a spark out of coil wire but not out of plug wire i need to know where all the wires should go does the single wire out of the distributor need to go maybe thats my problem i know you guys will know thanks jimmy
