Rich. You presently do not have an 8" rear, Its a 7.5". You need to change it to the 8" unit to get the 5 lug axles. Its a bolt in swap. The front drums and spindles can also be changed.
Cuting the fender lip Is not going to solve much. What will happen when the body leans in a turn? I believe it would still hit, cut the tire and interfere with steering the car.
Never cut any load carrying frame member to accomplish wheel clearence. Remember this is a unit body car and has only small frames at the front and rear of the car.
The front suspension can be replaced with Mustang II to get other benifits depending on what your goals are.

The rear area can be what is known as tubbed to get very large tires but that cost money and should be done by a shop with expertise.
Its difficult to give an answer as I'm not sure what your after. Please don't do any cutting of the frame or the suspension until you get a handle on what is to be accomplished.
Radical mods to the car done safely will cost a bundle. Define your goals then plan how to do it by reserch, who's going to do it and do you have the money.
We all like to see a car well done and reflect the owner's desires, good luck and do it safe and right.
Ken.
