ok, here's what to look for to find a pre-75 block. actually what you are looking for is a pre-73 or post-76 block. on the driver's side deck, right in front of the cylinder head, there is usually a code stamped into the block. it's right directly in front of the head, so you can't miss it. I will have something like 2c24 stamped on it. the first number is the year, like 2=72, 82, whatever...also look at the casting mumber on the pass. side rear of the block it should say D1AE or something like that...look for a block that has a "d" for the first letter. D means "70's" hope this helps
the 73-76 blocks have a .030" taller deck, reducing compression, but other than that, they are pretty much the same through '82
