It could be that the converter is not fully seated. If not it will allow you to partially engage the engine and transmission, but you won;t be able to bolt it together. If you try, you WILL break something.
Separate the two again. You should rotate the converter untilyou hear it "thunk" into the pump. when you reattach the engine you should be able to easily set the two together.
