: Both are 5 lug with the removal pumpkin. Both cars are coded with a '3' on the VIN plate on the door. I believe that means they are both 2.79 gears. I am more concerned with whether one is lighter duty than the other. Basically, do I need to swap them when I swap the engines?

: : : Is there any difference between the rear ends on 6 cyl cars versus those behind the v-8s? I have a 74 with 302 that I am moving into a 77 that had a 250. Should I also switch the rearends.?
: : Are they both 5 lug axles? There was a smaller rear in some Mav's. It can be identified by the inspection cover on the back, they had a 7.5 diameter ring gear. The rear that has a drop out pumpkin or 3rd member and no rear inspection cover is an 8inch. There should be a metal tag on them that tells the gear ratio which may be differnt from car to car. Most likely you have a 8inch, can't remember when Ford stopped using the 7.5 but probably was early 70's. The 8inch is plenty strong for stock or mildly hopped up V8's.
