Earl: could be a valve sticking open. Listen at the tail pipe to hear a skip in the exhaust sound. Use vaccuum gauge connected to an intake manifold fitting and observe its action. When that cylinder comes to fire,the needle will jump downward.
Swap the plug with another cylinder to see the effect.
The results of these observation has to lead to a conclusion as to what is going on.
Anything that causes the cylinder to lose compression is going to cause a miss.
Head gasket,sticking valve,cracked piston,broken ring,crack in the head letting water in could be anything involving cylinder sealing.
If the miss seems to subside somewhat with heat then expansion is closing up the problem area.
