: This post is in reference to the previous post "Another day in Maverick Hell." Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I now have the car running reasonably well, and I believe it's just a matter of tuning to get it where it needs to be. The problem turned out to be the vaccuum advance on the distributor. Both diaphragms were broken, and the advance was sticking in a different place each time, making it almost impossible to predict what it was going to do. I used the advance from my parts car, timed it & reset the idle speed & mixture, and now it seems to be doing much much better. There's still just the hint of a stutter at idle now, but I think that can be chaulked up to the crappy points ignition & bad tuning. It's still a work in progress. Thanks again for all the help and suggestions.
Great to hear. It just takes looking at all the places that can be cause.
My first instinct was ignition but not what you replaced. I once had a problem with the wire that comes thru the
dist. housing to the points. As the plate moved in response to the vacc signal it would short out
against the case.
