There are many that believe antifreeze is used to keep an engine cool!!!!but actually is very poor coolant. Its function is to prevent freezing and allows the use of lower capacity cooling systems by increasing the boiling point under higher pressure, hence the use of 12 to 16 pound radiator caps.
Nothing yet beats plain water as a coolant. The wetting agents reduce the localized boiling action like what happens when water in thrown onto a very hot surface. They reduce the immediate boil action around the combustion chamber and cylinder jacket areas.
