I read an article done by Mopar testing both! They
controlled the test real well. The only difference
they found was where the torque and hp peaked. The
whole idea was based upon exactly where you placed it. Going from hot to cold, is what moves the exhaust for the first 36" then it's the sound waves after that. That is why the delta flow mufflers work. The H pipe is for shortly after the header where the X pipes are for after the tranny. That is what I have seen. I am using the H pipe on mine as the guy who built my engine built 7 NHRA winners and he said to go that route.
Both work and if you have a prefered way you want the underside of your chassis to look choose that. Since I am using a 351w in my 74 Comet, I am forced to use the 302 headers that will make the header sit closer to the chassis, by putting the hpipe in that will also spread the heat out as an added bonus. If you have a 302 in yours, remember that the headers will sit lower on the car and an h pipe if installed right, will also be low and tend to drag unless you lift the car up. For some the best choice is an X pipe since it's in the back. For the ammt of difference I think that it is not worth the debate, just use what you think will fit better on your!

That is my opinion.
