The two sides of exhaust are sometimes joined for scavaging purposes. THE X pipe is not as effecient as an H. your left and right exhaust system travel paralell down the underside of the car. AN h pipe connects them together. When the 1st pulse travels down, it passes the H and creats a vacume and when the 2nd pulse is not quite there, it pulls it toward the back of the car faster. this happens back and forth between the sides of the exhaust. The X type system the pipes actually join in an x shape and share a common section that acts as an open chamber. that is why an H pipe works better it causes the vacume.

The real difference is that it moves around your torque peak a little.
You get it just right by putting the torque peak where you need it the most.

I doesn't give a real big change or anything like that, just moves it. YOU can adjust your torque peak by the length of the collectors on the car side of the headers too. SUmmit racings wizzard had a great class on how to figure it out by the length of your headers, engine and collector size and all that. check that out too!
