R= radial and there is a number on there somewhere for the rim size, Might be along the bead. Unless your rims are at least 7" wide they'll fit on 6"s but the problem is the side wall will be all wrong. You'll have a round look which will make the sidewall on the tires work harder and generate more heat. This can cause a sidewall failure. Also with the rounded effect it'll make your handling less effective because the tire sidewalls will not be supporting the car weight properly. Hence you'll have a tire roll problem. You want a rim that allowes the sidewalls to be almost straight up and down. Most of the tire rubber you see on highways is because of tire heat generated by low air pressure & sidewall failure. (Firestones probably)

: I am looking at a set of rims in a salvageyard that look really neat to me, The numbers on the tires were 220/55 R What does the R stand for, I thought they were supposed to have another number at the end to tell if they are 14's or 15's but they didn't, will they fit? If they are 14's will my tires 195/75/14 fit on them? I'm not to worried about clearance on the rear though, I did the JC whitney 4 leaf and the back is a little higher than the front. If they are 15's what would be the largest tire I could run on them?
: Thanks,
