: i was told i could put 351 winsor heads on a 66 289 can anyone help does it have to be a certain cast #
Yes, you could put the 351w heads on the 289. You would have a diffrence in head bolt sizes. The 351 uses a larger head bolt than the 289/302. Why do you want to put these heads on, though? If you just want the bigger valves, watch out, because all 351's don't have larger valves. I put 302 heads on my 351 because I already had it decked and had done the porting work on it (myself, and I didn't feel like doing it again). I had also already put 1.84/1.54 valves in it. I had to drill the bolt holes in the 302 heads out (I think a 1/16 of an inch) for the 351 head bolts to fit. Works fine, no blown head gaskets or anything. Anyway, when I pulled the original heads off the 351, it had smaller valves(1.78/1.?)To put 351 heads on a 289, I think you might have to get special head bolts. The ports on 351/302/289 heads are the same. Do you already have the 351 heads, here's my advice. Take the valves out of the 351 heads and put them in the 289. Then, if you also want a high compression ratio, deck the 289 heads. I have a formula to determine how much to deck heads if you need it. Hope this helps.
