: How hard is it to replace the gears in a 8"? To change the with another gear set like 3.55's or something. Are there special tools needed or can a back yard mech. do it. I don't mean changing the center sections, but the gears themselves. OR what kind of money are we talking to buy a complete center section from someone like Currie Ent.? Thanks Russ
I have done several of these and its a piece of cake. I have faith in you, you can do it. The gears run around 180.00 from Richmond, maybe some cheaper? Go to www.Ford-trucks.com and click on the Tech Articles in the right hand column. Scroll down to Rebuilding a 9inch Rear. The basics are there and it is almost the same as the 8in except bigger. It will help you decide if you want to tackle the job. The other tech articles might be interesting to you also. If you were close to Conway AR. I would do the job for you NO CHARGE for labor. Love to help out fellow Ford lovers. If you can find a rear end under a Mustang II, Pinto, Bobcat, Granada or Monarch with axle code on ID tag attached to third member, with the following code WDY-HH or WDY-S, these are 8in with 3.40:1 ratio. Good luck with your project.
