the soot is fuel, way to rich. Carb is screwed up, either float, choke valve, power valve, warped carb body, look for sights of this when you rebuild it. What does the air filter look like? Try just a little driving with the air filter out and housing on. Or the plugs could be wrong ones, "Heat range", recheck and see if right ones. Coil could also be weak not properly igniting fuel.
: Thanks RR... the plugs were replaced by the previous owner very recently. They don't show any wear, but they are very dark and sooty in appearance, indicating carbon fouling, i.e. running too rich. There was a little bit of oil around the base of each plug (next to the threads) but I am figuring this is probably due to bad valve stem seals, which is next on my list. The engine is as quiet as any I have ever heard... no bottom-end noise at all, and no valvetrain noise either. Even if it is a six-banger, I can't wait to get this car running right!
