: My 71 Maverick has a gremlin, and I need some help. When I bought it, it was missing. After putting the plug wires where they belong, not missing as bad, but still missing. I replaced the plug wires and distributor cap/rotor, still missing. It has new spark plugs, points, and coil, and it is firing on all cylinders.

: From the smell of the exhaust, it is obviously running way too rich. I adjusted the mixture screw all the way in (lean, i.e. no gas), and it is still running way too rich. With the screw all the way in, it shouldn't even run, right? My question is whether a fouled up carburetor would cause a bad miss in an otherwise healthy engine? It's an Autolite 1 barrel on a 250 inline six. I have ordered a rebuild kit, so hopefully that will address my problem. Any additional help or suggestions are appreciated.

All the other suggestions are very good. If all else fails, check the bearings in the distributor. Had that problem once. The bearings went south. Replaced distributor, no miss. Just a thought.
