Arnold is right, you can lubricate the cable. In most older cars you can actually remove the center cable from the tube; you must disconnect each end (from trans and inst. cluster), while leaving the tubing in place, you can slide the center cable out, and while it is out you should wipe it down, and use oil on it(pepboys sells lube for this exact application). Then when it is lubed, drip some lube down the tubing , and then slide the cable back through, although it may take a while to do. Now, this may sound dangerous but it was a common practice back in the old days(pre-80's). For all those skeptics: If it works then you may have just saved yourself from buying a new cable, and if doesnt, then your cable was doomed to begin with, then you would have to replace it anyway, so it doesnt hurt trying. But believe me, you can do this. But before you start disconnecting everything, make sure the cable isnt kinked on anything.
