backing plate goes between the water pump and the timing cover. Some engines use a seperate plate that covers the impeller of the pump. This was a early problem Ford had on the timing cover/water pump setup using the timing cover as the seal. The water would eat through the aluminum in the cover and water would start getting into the oil.
Timing cover is the aluminum part that bolts to the front of the block and covers the timing gears/chain, bolts to the front of the oilpan, the water pump bolts to, has the front crankshaft seal in it, and the mechanicial style fuel pump is mounted to;

: The stupid dumbasses at the parts stores around here wouldn't know a carb, from a jack in the box!!!Used to be you could go in one and they had smart knowlegdeable parts guys.Now....anyway,through venting now,can anyone help me find a timing chain cover?The one that was sent to me wasn't!Need I say more?Whats the difference between a timing chain cover and a water pump backing plate?The dealer asked me which one I needed.Aren't they the same thing?
: Thanks
