how old are your cables and what size are they? makes a big difference. Sometimes they corrode inside the insulation and you can't see it. To test just the starter itself, take the starter cable off the soleniod and jump it straight to the + on the battery. If it turns fine the soleniod is history. You can also pull all the sparks plugs out and turn it by hand, in nuerual if a stick, and should turn pretty easy. If not it's the engine itself.
: I HAVE A 1970 MAV WITH 250 CU. IN. SIX. PROBLEM STARTED ALL OF A SUDDEN WITH THE STARTER NOT TURNING OVER THE ENGINE. REPLACED THE STARTER AND STILL TURNS OVER VERY VERY SLOWLY, NOT ENOUGH TO START THE ENGINE. CHECKED ALL GROUNDS AND CABLES. BATTERY IS ONE YEAR OLD AND IS ON A SLOW TRICKLE CHARGE. CHECKED OUT CHARGING RATE--OKAY. COULD I HAVE A BAD STARTER RELAY? IT LOOKS FAIRLY NEW BUT HAVE NO IDEA WHEN IT WAS REPLACED. WHAT KIND OF PROBLEM DO I HAVE??
