gear change is best way, open is the same for a 8" or any other raerend. Unless you have the proper torque wrenches, dial indicator, shims, press, it's very easy to screw them up. And then you have to redo them again. Your rearend fits already, brakes lines, cable, driveshaft. New one might not fit as easily.
: Heres the deal, a gear change will cost me $250 to have 3.55 installed, while a complete rebuilt rear would cost around $600. What is replaced during the typical rebuild other than seals and bearings? How hard would it be to change my own gears, or just rebuild my rear on my own? Is a kit made that contains all of these components? BTW, it is a standard 8 inch open rear. Oh, and what kind of tools are required?
