Yeah, you need both gaskets, one between the backing plate and pump and one between the backing plate and timing cover... It is a good idea to use some kind of sealant, RTV will work but it makes the gasket slippery and sometimes it'll slide out when you tighten it (if you're not careful). I prefer Permatex Form-A-Gasket No.2, I've never had a leak with it. Put a very light coat (as light a possible) on the metal surfaces and stick the gasket on & install. Here's a pic of the permatex stuff... I'm sure everyone has a different way of doing it and This isn't the only right way but it works for me, and I've done several WP's. -CP

: Hey all, I traded my cast iron one for a 91 crown vic aluminum one, not to often you get money back on that kinda trade! One quesiton though, it has a backing plate with a gasket between the waterpump and plate, should I also run the other gasket in the bag between the backing plate and the front cover? I assume I should in order to seal the water passage. Do I need to use any RTV Sealant anywhere? I have never installed a waterpump before, Changed trannys, rearends and motors but never a simple waterpump! Thanx for all the help on the resent mav upgrades!
