It could be a bad motor mount allowing excess engine travel. This would allow the fan to hit the fan shroud or heaven forbid the radiator itself. Lift the hood and put the car in gear while holding your foot on the brake, (apply parking brake too if it works) give the car enough gas to make it pull against the brakes (keep the brakes on firm enough to keep the car from moving) and watch for excessive engine movement and keep listening for the noise also.
Let us know what you find out.
BUT I still have the problem that when I take off really fast either from a dead stop or while moving something that sounds like a sprocket with a chain is not catching but I had the timing chain replaced. Can anyone decifer what this might be. I have had it for about a year and it has always made this noise. It sounds like two metal things that are not catching.
