Jeri; sounds like a spark knock to me. Try using premium gas to get rid of it. If it works, check the timing to see if it has slipped. Also, this can be caused by carbon on the piston tops. If it is spark knock, try retarding the timing about a degree at a time, but don't go below about 9degrees. If you are using points, check them to see if they are worn or getting pitted.
