depends on how much money you want to spend? Currie or Mark Williams will make you a set of Forged steel axles for appx. $450, and install the "Detroit" locker that is available for the 8" and you won't break it. Gear selection is the biggest problem. I know a 71 Maverick that goes 10.8s at 122 mph in the qtr and she uses a 8" spool. She has never had a problem with it. The biggest problem with both the 8" & 9" is the 28 spline axles, at the spline end. That why Ford used the 31 spline on the CJs. So unless you use a 31 spline 9" all you adding is more weight. And that's only if you use factory stuff. If you go to Aftermarket axles that are stronger, you now have increased you strength, kept the weight down, didn't have to do the weld and mount situation, and no body knows until it's to late. There also was some Ford type magazines this year that had people using 8" in there drag cars and have had no problems.
The real problem is not your horsepower numbers, it's the weight of the car and the engine torque. Heavy cars with big block torque, break things.
: does anyone know what the best rear would be for my 72 maverick that is going to end up with around 300-400 hp? what size and gears should i look for? keep in mind i want pull outta the hole, but need to use as a daily driver and some highway miles. thanks for the ideas.
