two reasons usually for the different tanks.
1. tank capacity,
2. trunk contours.
if it fits use it, just make sure and get the tank sending unit that goes with that tank, don't try and use the old tanks sending unit.
: Does any one know why the gas tank on a 76/77 would be any different that one on a 71. I know the 69/70's are drop in but the others all look the same. If there is some difference could you still use the later one on a 71?
