Just for the record...I used a wood block. It was a safe operation....I smashed my finger when my pry bar slipped. I feel that compressing the springs with a spring compressor will remove the suspicion that the spring might be causing binding or something......that suspicion lead to frustration/haste and my smashed finger. I say no to the chain and wood block. But who knows, maybe it's really stuck.....The secondary effect of a wood block is safety but the primary purpose is to remove tension.....you would never get it apart otherwise. I have to assume from past experience that the choice way is to remove the springs.
::The only attaching points keeping the front spring in place are the upper and lower ball joints and spindle. If steps are not taken to compress the spring and or limit the travel of the lower control arm when either ball joint is taken loose, injury can result. Use of a spring compressor or a ((well placed))chain of sufficient strength around the upper to lower control arms to control the spring action once an attaching point is released is a safty and reassembly issue as one person has already found out.
:...Spring tension is measured in hundred lbs./inch of compression. If the spring is compressed for example from its free length to say 2 inches then there can be several hundred lbs. tension on the spring (depending on the spring's rate) at the time it is released at either ball joint, so steps must be taken to control this release.
:...Work safely. Ken
