:The way I get rid of old gas tanks is to air them out in the sun for a few days, then flush with water. Then plug all holes with rags. Then stuff the hose in one hole and turn on the water. when it's full I take my air chisel & cut the tank in half following the seam. Then it's safe to dispose of or cut the vent of the top. The new tank will have no fumes to worry about. Good enough.
