:so where does a 72 fall in that ken?
.72 2v is 140 hp with the same block demensions as the 69. Cr is 8.5. With the right parts and head selection, the 72 can be built as a 220 hp, 2v engine. If you could be satisified with an engine built with higher performance to run in about the same rpm range as a stocker that can be done also. Its called a torque motor. Bring the cr up to 9.5, use an RV cam, small 4v carb on a factory 289 4v manifold and dual exhaust and if 8" rear, use 3.1 gearing. Well tuned, its a nice responsive motor without winding much past 5200 rpm. A little bowl work in the heads and exhaust ports won't hurt either. This engine can be built out of stock factory parts except for obtaining flat top pistons. Note that in 77, factory went back to the shorter deck block like the 68-72s.
