leaking cowl vent ahhhhhhh!!!!!

my drivers side cowl vent started leaking today in a heavy rain storm that we're having. I can't even imagine the work it would take to weld in new metal down there. can I just get some of that expanding foam junk and plug that baby up at that top. I dont' know the pros and cons. i guess I won't get fresh air big deal. I can just crack my window. will my defroster still work though?
