:call the dealership of the car and talk to the shop about how it comes off. or call a local front end shop and ask them. Sounds like you have a retainer of some kind that you haven't removed yet.

Hah! Call my local front end shop and admit defeat! Never!! I'm male, dammit! Seriously, the other one came off with much less effort, though this side is the one with the wrecked CV joint behind it, so I'm wondering if it didn't wrench itself seriously tight when the CV joint failed.
