Have you checked the timing? If it is to far advanced it will start hard and usually run hot. Make sure when having it checked, to have the vacuum advance looked at. Also, if the carburator is running lean or maybe a vacuum leak at the intake manifold, will have similar symptoms. We can also get into blown head gaskets, cracked head and or block, but lets eliminate the small stuff first, it's cheaper.
