looking for paint prep tips

Finally got my motorcycle finished and I am looking for tips on how to prep my mav to get it painted, Everyone tells me painting is 90% prep and 10% paint. This is my first time doing this and don't want to F up to much. What grain sandpaper should I use, sand in circles or back and forth? Any replies are appriciated. Thanks, RudyD
