:say cruising at 2000rpms, what should my total timing be?

Some years back I did a work up on the timing on my then carbed setup to get the best reponse out of aftermarket weights and springs. It took a lot of time but the end result was worth it.
What you do is get a timing lite of the 'dial-back' type, a tachmeter, then run the engine every 500 rpm upwards to where max. timing occurrs and record the readings from the dial on the lite and plot the curve. Then if you make changes to spring/weights etc. then you can return back if the result are not in the direction desired. It will be a good education.
My experience would suggest that a stock dist. would be in the 16-20 deg range depending on other factors. For max.performance it is common practice to have all advance in by around 25 degs.and to set the upper limit to about 36 degs +/-.
These values depend on car weight, gearing, fuel quality, driving style, heads used, coolant temp., etc.
Respectfully, Ken
