Column shift knob removal? are there threads or what/glue?

I want to replace the end of my shifter on a column shift. I have a cool chunk of aluminum that will make an excellent replacement. Is it like a spline type of deal or does it screw off. Mine won't budge and I want to know before I crush it off with the jaws of life.
