Changing axles won't help. If I'm nt mistaken, 4.5 is the proper offset for a stock rear end. The way to find out is to do the following. Put the straight edge of a yard stick on the drum brake flange then measure the distance between it and the inner fender well or leaf spring. Give yourself a minimum of 3/4" gap. Also, watch out for interference with the fender well lip. If you're too wide, you'll shred your tires.
