:I was a previous owner of a `71 Maverick with a 200,and a `73 Comet with a 302. The Comet had stock manifolds, and it looked like an impossible fit for headers. I`m in the market for a 70-74 2-door Maverick, and would like to install headers, what fits?,and I`m guessing the "drop them in place" before the engine goes in would be easier. Also I plan on an engine swap if I end up buying a six,to a 302. It`s been quite a few years, but if I recall correctly new engine mounts have to be WELDED in,yes,no? Any other problems I might encounter with the swap. I`m interested in a trade for my `70 Nova, details in classified under Wanted 70-74 2 door
............. MM, for a 302, there is no difference between the Mav and the Comet V8 cars for exhaust. If you are looking for long tube headers, the Hedmon #88-300 will fit. If you have power steering, the cylinder will have to be dropped downward on the frame side about 3" to allow the pipes to use some of that area. Also the shifter will need to be a floor unit. Another header that will fit is the Hedmon #88-400 and requires little alteration. The motor mounts have no requirement to be welded in under ordinary circimstance. It's quite difficult to place an engine in the bay with full length headers, if at all. When dropping the engine in, bolt the headers on when the engine is just several inches from resting in the mounts and tipped back at an angle somewhat. On a 6 to 8 swap, the 'frame' mounts are different for a 6. Radiator and other small items will need to be addressed during the change over as well as the front spring in a 6 car may sag a little. Then there is brakes. If there 9" drum, I would want to have either 10" drum or convert to 11" disc 5 lug. Working with a 6 car calls for extra work as like the rear end may be a 7" ETC. Good luck with what you decide to do. |
