For anyone looking for a similar swap for an overdrive, we've been using the old Granada OD's as a swap for the toploader. In fact, it IS a toploader that Ford modified into an OD. All we have to do to put it in a Mustang, is use the toploader tailshaft. The shifter & linkage works just as designed, using the original shifter handle. Unless you see the D7XX part number in the case, it looks like the real thing. There was also a truck version that had larger bearings. I just put one in and had the tailshaft machined to fit the larger bearing. Cost-$35. With a 2.80 rear, the tach said 3000@90MPH, as r the Granada trans is a .80 final. The truck version is .69 and I'm down to 2700@90. It's almost too much, so I'm going to a 3.25 and will be back up to 3000@90. They aren't that easy to find, and if they needs parts, most are toploader parts. I've spoken to some of the 4 speed rebuilders, and it's the same price to rebuild the OD. With this swap, there are NO modifications necessary and everything is stock Ford. The easiest way to spot these trans, is a boss near the top of the case with ORION stamped on it.
