:Hello, I was on the board a long time ago and recently got back in the swing. Anyways, I'm in the middle of putting an AOD and carbureted 302 in my '75 Mav. This is my first try--half of this stuff I've never seen before. The 302 I'm putting together from "scratch," and I have no other 302 to reference. Any input on the following: Is my oil pan supposed to have a forward or aft sump? Is there anything that actuates my oil pump, or does it just hang there? How do I make sure my MSD distributor is lined up correctly with the cylinder sequence and how do I bolt it on? Anyone in the Bremerton/Seattle area who wants to come help me out? Thanks!
.
..Oil pan is a forward sump.
..Oil pump in driven by a (link rod) to the bottom of the dist. that is driven by the cam.
..Dist timing is referenced with the front crank damper TDC mark lined up with the pointer, first cylinder on the left side (facing the engine) up on compression (both valves closed). Finding which dist. cap hole is #1, mark dist rotor location for that hole and work the dist down into the hole rembering that the oil pump drive shaft needs to line up both ends for it to set completly down.
..AOD--- You MUST have the (TV) linkage or cable whichever you get, hooked up between the carb and the trans and adjusted near correct before the car is driven or the trans will be damaged.
..AOD mount requires an extension rearward from the original trans mount. Depending on weather you have an AOD with a short or longer tail shaft, the drive shaft may need a length change.
..Best we can do for you now. Do a lot of reserch, don't guess on anything. Your going to do a lot of work and spend money. We saw others go through this before so mistakes like the TV linkage can be very frustrating. I'm sure others will be offering there help on the board but its up to you to translate to the action.
Very best of luck, Ken
