Earls way works good. Another way is to bring the crank around until the ballancer lines up to TDC and then check the valves on #1 cylinder to see if they are both closed. That will be both of the valve springs are even and level. If the engine is 180° out, one of the valves will be open and therefore pushed down by the rocker arm, you want them the same hight.

Then locate #1 on the distributor cap and line the rotor up with that and then turn it counter-clockwise about 3/4 of the way towards the next terminal on the cap. Center the vacuum advance between obsticals so you can adjust the timing when it is in, and slowly feed it into the engine. The rotor will turn as you drop it in back to where it is lined up when it is seated.
