many times the outside looks the same, but the guts are different. Autos are real easy to hide, HiPo, Taxi/Police & general guts. Manuals they use stronger bearings, forks, and gears in the same casing. Just like 9" rearends all look alike too.

: I have a 72 maverick grabber with a 3 speed 200 6cyl and stripped a 74 comet that was a 302 with a 3 speed and they were the same model of trans all but the z-bar and bell

::Thanks! Guess I'll hit the salvage yards and check the local tranny shops to see what they want for a rebuilt c4.
::
:::They're different on V-8s, just as there's at least three different 4sp I know of.

::::So did Ford use a different 3-speed for the few Mavs that went out with the 302/3-speed combo, or sell the customer what they wanted knowing it wouldn't last?
::::
:::::bellhousing is different and the three speed won't handle the torque of the 302 very long. Rebuild the C-4 with some good parts and it'll last forever.

::::::I read Charlie's article on swapping the stick into the Mav, but some things still aren't clear to me. Unfortunately, I have little experience with manual transmissions. I have a 77 302/C4 car that I currently drive, and a 71 200/3-speed car that I plan to restore and (the original plan) swap the v-8 and auto into. Unfortunately, it looks like the c-4 may be at the end of its life. It may be rebuildable, but I didn't want to have to mess with it until after I was done restoring the Grabber and was ready to do the v-8 swap. It doesn't sound like it would be worth putting the 3-speed into v-8 car, but I suppose it is worth asking. I know I can order the z-bar, but does it come with everything I need, or would I have to get additional parts too? For some reason I have the impression that it won't just bolt right up to the 302.
