:::Has anyone here changed their a/c system to the new R-134a or does anyone know any information on it? I would like to have opions on whether or not to try it.
::
::I looked into it when the a/c on my '89 Dodge went out. I was told that you have to purge your system of all R-19 before you replace it with the R-134a. My advice to you is to let a professional do it. You may have to replace the filter also. If your system is still charged with the R-19, the old refrigerant is supposed to be collected by Federal law for recycling. There is supposed to be a stiff fine for just letting it vent out. I know, it's only illegal if you get caught. The R-134a is supposed to work just as the old does, even in converted systems. The good thing is that the R-19 is getting scarcer to get in the U.S. and therefore more expensive, so the conversion may will money in the long run if you need service later. You can still get it cheaper in Canada. I believe they still sell the R-19 cans for home recharging there. There is conversion kits available everywhere for about $45 to do it yourself. Whether you do it yourself or have a pro do it is entirely up to you.

:::::::::The 134 will run at a little higher head presure than r-12, but it will cool like r-12.Every thing that you need is at Autozone the conversion kit is &35.00 they alsoloan all of the tools that you will need to do the job. You will have to vacuum yhe system (the vacuum pump is at AZ) although it may not be needed it is a good idea to change the oriface tube to bo sure that you do not have any dirt in the system. If you find that the oriface tube is very dirty you should think about flushing the system and vacuuming it down one more time. With that done just open the recharge kit and follow thi instructions and you will be chillin' in no time. Good luck , and don't let the length of this bother you I just wanted to explane it as thourly as possible.

I meant R-12. Alzheimers is a great thing. You meet new people every day. Bottom line is that, like I said, the ssytem needs purged and the filter, alias the orifice tube, needs changed. Yourself, or professionally, it'll work.
