First, for the biggest bang for the buck, you could lower the upper control arms 1" to reduce the roll rate and increase the negative camber gain. That will do a lot to help the inherent understeer. Use the same template as a 67-70 Mustang. This mod will cost you the price of a 17/32" drill bit. Just measure carefully and do not go more than 1" without a negative wedge kit. You'll need to borrow a spring compressor. This would be a good time to lower the front end as well by cutting up to a full coil out of the spring. Use an abrasive wheel to cut the spring, not a torch. IIRC, a Granada sway bar will fit. I know it does on early Mustangs. If it does fit the Mav, it's 15/16" on most Granadas and would be a big improvement over the stock skinny bar. You'll need the mounting bushings from the Granada. That might cost you $10. The alignment specs someone else mentioned will help. +2.5 to 3.0 degrees caster, 0 to -1 degrees camber, 1/8 to 1/4 " toe-in. Good shocks are a must. KYB gas or Konis are great. Finally, good tires. There is a limited selection of 14" performance tires. Go to 15" at least. For cheap 5-lug, 16" wheels, find a late model Crown Vic (sorry 4-lug guys). They are 7" wide and have a 4.5" backspace. You might need a 1/4" spacer to fit the front. The steel version might cost $20 each at the junkyard. You can probably fit a 245/50-16 tire into a Maverick with no clearance issues at all. |
