Jeri,
First of all, follow Kens advice closely. That's the best one I read so far.
Secondly, there is one more thing that can cause a Maverick to pull when applying brakes that no one has touched on yet so after you get your brakes checked (most likely the problem), if in fact it is determined that your brakes are not causing the pull...have a new set of bushings installed on your strut rods. These are the rods that attache to your lower control arms and bolt to the bottom of your radiator support. These are very inexpensive and fairly easy to install but your car will have to be realigned after installation. When these bushings become worn, it will allow either or both wheels to move frontwards or backwards (depending on direction of travel) when the brakes are applied. If your left wheel moves backwards more than your right wheel, it will pull left when applying the brakes. If these bushings have never been changed before, odds are you need them regardless of your brake condition.
I would consider doing a good thorough brake job and replacing the bushings at the same time. This is a safety issue.
I believe you will find the shimmy issue to be a bad tire or an out of balance tire.
Good luck and let us know how you come out.
Ray
