:Hi. I have not posted much since 9-11. We pulled a good fly wheel and replaced the old worn fly wheel in my 302. After a new starter was put in, it works. The first time to hear the engine run. 302 and sounds sweet! Obviously has a nice little cam, and supposed to be board out close to a 351? Any way..
:
:The starter makes a loud noise. Not grinding, its hard to explain. But it is like a regular starter, just VERY loud. The engine has a history of wearing out flywheels, and I think this is the third one. on the old one, the top of the teeth are shiny like the starter hits it tight, and one side has about five teeth worn down, give or take a few.
:
:I dont want to make a life time of changing fly wheels, so what do you think is wrong.
:
:My dad called the ford house, and he thinks he has the right one. The engine is out of an 82 ford 100 truck, but I dont know if it is origional.

Just my thoughts on it, assuming you have a C4 in it, did you use the block to bell housing spacer plate? Is there a flexplate spacer on the crank? All of these can cause problems if not installed, also have run into starters that the nose is a bit longer and will hit the teeth. Have done a fix on some applications by drilling out the top starter bolt hole and pivoting the starter outward a little to give more drive gear to ring gear clearance. Check the block # for year it was made etc. Just for info the 302 can only be bored safely to .060 oversize, which equates to about 306 cubic inches, but the right stuff with them, they can haul the mail in awsome fashion. Maybe Ken or Ricky have more info than I do on your problem.
