Years and years ago we had a drag strip close to the base i was stationed at. I used to take my 1969 mustang there and race it. It has been years tho. I do abit of stop light racing when the chance and no danger of cross traffic presents itself, but its only upto about 45 to 60mph, enough to get a good launch and hit second. Mainly i am looking for afew things in this maverick, 13.1 on engine in the 1/4 mile and a nice lopey idle. High end speed doesn't impress me, i like the 0 to 60 pulling sensation. Handling is ok, but i rarely street race and really do not need the knife edge response of my old firebird. When on the highway i am the guy that has atleast 5 to 8 car lengths infront of me at 65mph and the only time i have ever gunned it and weaved in and out of traffic is the evening the twister ate fortworth texas. I even past a cop at 125mph that day in my old firebird. Anyways, i am figuring 350hp out of a 302 should get me close to a 13.1 in a 2900lb car plus my 225lb frame, will add a 150 shot of the funny fumes for insurance and as long as it has a throaty rumble it is good. Not interested in being the fastest or look the best - i guess i am stuck in the 80's when a jacked up rearend, primered grey with skinnies upfront was the look and ya could be heard from 2 blocks with a loud burst of power followed by a nice idle that meant business.

:A few questions and suggestions. Have you ever done any dragracing? Not street racing, but lights and timers? Just wanted to know because if you haven't yet, use the milder version of your car for practice. With that in mind use the Weiand Stealth Maniflod #8020. idle-6800 PRMs and you can use it on both engines. Use a 650 DP Holley carb, and use it on both, adjust it for starting line and practice your starts. Camshaft, Crane #130042 with stock valve springs. This cam will work only for a milder setup. The 3.80 gears are a little high, I'd use 3.50s they'll work for both setups. Torque convertors will have to be changed.
: Count on rebuilding the trans, driveline, (check the junkyards for a aluminum one and adapt it), suspension and brakes.
: For the stronger engine, just buy a SVO 302 shortblock or block, with all the good stuff in it. Unless you want to build it yourself, which I can understand the pride in doing that. I RECOMMEND camshaft Crane #130092. Get you a set of good roller rocker arms now and use them for both setups. Better igition, (Accel) is my preference, never had a problem with them and I run one in a 82 Zephyr, 460, at 11.13s at 121MPH.

::The short term goal for the car is to get it to run in the mid to high 14's with the above parts. I am going to add a cam, 3.80 gears and a 2200 stall convertor. I am hoping that will get me into the 14's. Basically the whole thing will be adding parts/replacing parts without having to pull the motor.
::
::
::When i get that done, i plan on picking up a used motor and building a race preped shortblock - it will have forged pistons with atleast 9.5:1 compression. I will add a decent cam - loping idle and 13.1 ET on motor is the only goal in mind, i will add a 150hp NOS system after i get the motor to run consistantly at 13.1 in the 1/4 mile.
::
::
::So all that said, on the stock motor with 8.0:1 compression WITH 1995 heads that have been ported, polished and gasket matched, a 4bbl holly 600cfm, weiand single plane manifold, headers, duel exhaust (dumped before the rear axle) and 3.0 gears...... What cam is the max i can run and see some improvement - 14.7 ET is the goal here and lope if i can get it. Keep in mind i will be adding a 2200 stall convertor and 3.80 rear gears soon.
