This weekend I picked up a 1972 Maverick Grabber and 1972 Mercury Comet GT :bananaman. Shout out to Red1972Grabber for giving me the lead for these cars. Both of these cars have been sitting in a guy's yard for a decade or more accumulating rust, mud, spiders, tree sap, and other assorted goodies.

The Comet was last registered in 1987 and the Maverick was last registered in 1990, so both cars have been sitting for a long, long time. I'm 99% sure the Comet is a GT. It was a bright red, black striped, V8, manual transmission car from the factory...very desirable car. At some point somebody repainted it red/orange with white stripes and tail panel. Somebody also put in an automatic transmission and floor shift at some point. At a later date, somebody then removed the engine. A little rust, but not too bad at all.

As for the Mav, it's basically a complete car except for the missing high back bucket seats. This car was a yellow, V8, AC, bucket seat, power steering car from the factory, basically one of the top of the line Mavericks ever produced. But, the car is pretty rusty. It used to have a vinyl top, so the roof has rusted through in a half dozen places.

After putting in about 15 hours of driving and winching yesterday and about 8 hours today of washing, vacuuming, and winching, both cars are now sitting comfortably in my garage. Here are some pictures of the cars as they sat when I picked them up.

Here are some pictures of the Comet after I sprayed the grime off and washed it. Note the black stripes on the door jamb, which give away that this is likely a GT.

Here are some pictures of the Maverick after a good washing. Still need to clean out the interior, which is a mess.

Here's a picture of trailering the Comet home and a final picture of them both sitting comfortably in my garage. It was worth all of the effort in the end. Neither of these cars have titles, so we'll see what kind of magic I can work with that...wish me luck. My current thought is to keep the Comet and part out the Grabber. The rusty roof probably relegates this car as a parts car to me, but maybe I'll change my mind on that.

I hate to say it, but the Comet looks like the better of the two, how are the floors? Looks like there is moss growing on the carpet..

    Nice find. :Handshake

You're a very lucky guy. I wish I had a wife that would let me park all my project cars in our house garage. :p

Good point. The back seat of the Comet looks like a pack of mice have been chewing on it and making nests out of the foam. I'll have to put out a few mouse traps and see if there are any mice making their way around the garage.

Not much of a fan of Comets I take it? The floors didn't look too bad on either car when I looked at them briefly. But, I didn't get a good look at them and I'm sure there has to be some rust with the leaky cowl/windshield on the Comet and the holes in the roof on the Mav.

Naaa, I don't really care, but it seems like a touchy subject for some.
I like the Comet, it would be a cool looking car done up. Can you get titles for them? Or do you have to pay fee's back dated till the last time it was on the road? I know someone that tried to buy a car from California, and had to do something like that, to get the title, so he could bring it to Canada.
Either way, it's a good score on both cars. (y)
