I recently rebuilt my carb on my 250 ci. When I went to start the car for the first time after the rebuild, it would not turn over. Pretty much ran the battery down and made the positive battery cable very hot. Took the negative cable off battery and put the battery on the charger to try again the next day. Next day put negative cable back on battery and engine light came on before I even put the key in the ignition. Tried to start it anyway and it would not turn over. When I turned the key off, the motor continued to try to crank. I had to get out and take off the neg battery cable to make it quit trying to start. Went and got a new Positive battery cable and installed. Engine light came on again when I hooked up the Negative side, tried to start it, would not turn over and the engine continued to try to start even after I turned the key off. Removed the Neg. cable to make it quit. What is happening and how do I fix it?

You can pound/tap on the starter relay to make it stop sometimes. I would check all connections for ground and positive cables like replacement battery cable ends where corrosion may be present. wes

Do you have the two wires going to the solenoid switched

Yes .there are cheap starter relays that can hang up and burn up wires. The dash lights, or light, being on before the key is on.indicates shorted wires ,or a miss wired starter relay. Make sure you have an engine to battery ground, and a battery to body ground. Keep the negative cable on the battery disconnected when the car is not running or cranking until the problem is fixed .:tiphat:
