What would it take to install a 289 into a '70 Maverick with the I6 200?

Frame mounts, motor mounts, belly bar, transmission crossmember, V8 throttle cable, V8 throttle cable bracket, and Engine bay wiring harness. So about $300-$500 for all the conversion stuff.

A 289 will likely have a passenger side water pump inlet, not a biggie use a '69 Mustang radiator. Note many sellers have not a clue inlet swapped positions in '70 from 1969. Will say '69 & '70 rads are same.

A 200 trans will NOT bolt to the 289, at least must swap bell housing & converter, plus source a early(28 oz) balance flexplate. Should be able to use the 200 starter, though it will not clock properly.

There are swap articles in the tech section.

I'd be better off getting a header for this engine i suppose.

What is it you wish to accomplish with the 289 swap? If your intention is increased horsepower, there is a big difference in performance between a 289 and a 200 I6 with a header.

Do you already have the 289?

Just use a 302 timing cover and water pump.

And harmonic balancer with timing marks on opposite side.

I know there's no comparison between a 289 and a 200 with a header. I just think i'll settle for pepping up what i already have (no, i dont have the 289 yet). I figure a header for the 200 would be easier. Speaking of exhaust, has anybody tried porting the stock manifold?

If you don't already have a 289 - think 302 instead. They are so much easier to find.

As for your I-6 - check out FORDSIX - there is more information there about those motors than anywhere else in the world - https://fordsix.com/

It will sound terrible and still wont be fast. 302 is the logical choice for a V-8 swap.

If the only modification is the header.....you will not find much if any performance enhancement.

Just my 2 cents, as if you cared. If at some point you are wanting performance, do not waste any money on the six, other than to maintain it. Yes, it can be made to perform, but with a simple 302 you will be way ahead of a juiced six and there is a larger assortment of parts available. The only thing I would consider for a six is electronic ignition, and that is more about dependability than performance. A 289 is fine for a 65 - 68 Mustang, but they are becoming more difficult to find in decent shape, and as there is no replacement for displacement, a 302 fits the bill.

I've already installed the Pertronix kit for it. It definitely runs smoother, plus it gave it a slight amount of power. Retiming it helped alot. I also used Motorkote in the oil. Thats the only oil additive I've ever seen thats actually worth opening your wallet for.

I'm mostly interested in keeping this piece of history alive, while also spicing it up just a tad. I'm stopped all the time by older guys telling me about their Maverick they had back in the day. I get alot of offers. Needless to say, I aint selling this thing.
